Check your bill
Your electricity bill carries your NMI, the National Meter Identifier for your connection. For most homes and businesses, its first digits tell you your network for certain.
| NMI starts with | Network | Faults and emergencies |
|---|---|---|
| 4102, 4103, 4104 | Ausgrid | 13 13 88 |
| 431 | Endeavour Energy | 131 003 |
| 4001, 4204, 4407, 4508 | Essential Energy | 13 20 80 |
Source: AEMO NMI Allocation List, version 14. If you do not have your NMI to hand, most bills also print a 24 hour faults and emergencies number, and that number belongs to your network.
Why your network matters
Power out or wires down
Call your network, not your retailer. The network owns the street poles and wires and sends the crew. If anyone is in danger, call 000 and stay at least 8 metres from fallen wires.
Level 2 work
Service mains, private poles and defect notices all go through your network, and meters through your retailer. Thorntek is accredited with Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy and we lodge every application for you.
Supply upgrades
Going to 3 phase, or upgrading your supply for solar, a battery or an EV charger, means an application to your network before the work starts.
Who runs which area
Ausgrid
Sydney's CBD, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore and Northern Beaches, St George, Sutherland and Bankstown, plus the Central Coast and the Hunter.
Faults: 13 13 88
Endeavour Energy
Parramatta and Western Sydney, the Hills, the Hawkesbury, Macarthur, the Blue Mountains and Lithgow, the Illawarra, the Southern Highlands and the Shoalhaven.
Faults: 131 003
The Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy boundary runs through some suburbs, including Castle Hill and Glenhaven, so the checker works by street address, not suburb.
Common questions
Is my network the same as my electricity retailer?
No. Your retailer sends the bill and can be changed. Your network owns the poles, wires and street supply, fixes faults and outages, and is set by where you are.
Who do I call when the power goes out?
Your network's faults and emergencies line: Ausgrid 13 13 88, Endeavour Energy 131 003, Essential Energy 13 20 80. If anyone is in danger, call 000, and stay at least 8 metres away from fallen wires.
What is an NMI and where do I find it?
Your National Meter Identifier, a 10 or 11 digit number unique to your electricity connection. It is printed on your electricity bill. The first digits tell you your network: 4102 to 4104 is Ausgrid, 431 is Endeavour Energy, and 4001, 4204, 4407 or 4508 is Essential Energy. Enter it in the bill check on this page.
Can one suburb be on two networks?
Yes. The Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy boundary runs through suburbs such as Castle Hill and Glenhaven, where streets a few hundred metres apart can be on different networks. This checker works by street address and asks you to check your bill near the line.
Why does a Level 2 electrician need to know my network?
Every Level 2 job is lodged with the network that supplies the property, and each network runs its own approvals. Thorntek is accredited with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy and lodges every application for you. Call 1300 58 58 16.
How accurate is this checker?
It checks your address live against Ausgrid's and Endeavour Energy's own published network boundaries. The networks publish those maps as a guide, so anywhere within 200 metres of the line between Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy the checker tells you to confirm with your bill. Your NMI is the final word.
