Old switchboard? Replaced.

Switchboard upgrades across Sydney, homes and commercial sites. We swap old boards for new compliant switchboards. Fixed quote from your photos, power back on the same day.

New compliant switchboard installed by Thorntek in Sydney

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

Switchboards don't fail loudly. They just fall behind the load the house or the site puts on them.

  • Ceramic rewireable fuses or plug in fuse wedges
  • No safety switches on power or lighting circuits
  • Breakers that trip under normal load
  • A warm board face, a buzz, or a burnt smell near the meter
  • No room left for another circuit
  • A defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy

Two or more of those? Send us photos and we'll tell you straight whether it needs doing. Board flagged on a notice? That's defect rectification, and we do that too.

How the upgrade runs

01

Open your meter box door and photograph the inside: the front of the panel. Upload it through the contact page or the switchboard audit.

02

We assess from your photos and property details, with a free site visit if it's needed, and send you a fixed quote.

03

On the day: new enclosure in, RCBO protection on every circuit, consumer mains upgraded where they're undersized, everything tested before power goes back on.

04

We issue the Certificate of Compliance (CCEW) and lodge every network notification for you.

Never open the internal panel. The door photo shows us everything we need to price the job.

What the upgrade includes

A new compliant enclosure. RCBO protection (safety switch and circuit breaker in one) on every circuit. Undersized consumer mains upgraded where required. And a full test of the installation before the power goes back on.

We handle the service side, from the network point of supply through to your main switchboard, and every Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy approval that comes with it. If the meter needs exchanging, we're accredited to do that on behalf of your retailer, the same day as the works.

Where asbestos cement backing sits behind the old board, we coordinate licensed removal as part of the job, so the new board mounts on fresh, compliant backing.

How long it takes

A house switchboard upgrade in Sydney is a one day job. The power is off for part of the day and back on before we leave. Commercial changeovers run as a planned shutdown, executed in a day.

On the bigger, more involved supplies we keep the site live on a backup generator while the work happens. Nobody sits around for days without power.

Fixed quote from photos

Open your meter box door and take a clear photo of the inside. The front of the panel is all we need to see. Never open the internal panel yourself; the door photo shows us everything.

Upload it with your details through the contact page or the free switchboard audit. We assess from your photos and property details, add a free site visit if one is needed, then send an accurate fixed quote, not an estimate that creeps.

Planning an EV charger or more load down the track? Tell us. We build RCBO protection or spare space into the board for it, or step you up to three phase power in the same job.

Common questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Sydney?

Every board is different. The price depends on the size of the board, the number of circuits, and whether the consumer mains need upgrading at the same time. We give you a fixed quote after seeing photos of the inside of your meter box, so the number on the quote is the number on the invoice. Upload your photos through the contact page.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, circuits that trip or lights that flicker, or a letter flagging the board are the usual signs. Open the meter box door, take a photo of the inside, and send it through our contact page. We will tell you straight whether it needs doing.

Are old ceramic fuse boxes dangerous?

Old fuse boards give you none of the RCD (safety switch) protection current standards require, and aged fuses and the wiring behind them carry a real shock and fire risk as they deteriorate. If your board still runs ceramic fuses, it is worth getting looked at. A photo of the inside of your meter box through the contact page is all it takes.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

The majority of residential switchboard upgrades, single phase or three phase, are completed within the day, with power back on before we leave. Larger commercial boards take longer and are planned around your operating hours. We confirm the timing in your fixed quote.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for solar panels?

Often, yes. The inverter needs its own protection, and many older boards have no room or stop complying once new circuits are added. We upgrade the board and are accredited to handle the metering side as well, so your solar installer is not held up. Send us photos of the inside of your meter box before the solar goes in and we will confirm.

Do I need a Level 2 electrician for a switchboard upgrade in NSW?

A licensed electrician can replace the board itself, but if the consumer mains, service or metering need work, which older boards usually do, that is Level 2 ASP territory. Thorntek holds ASP 4869 with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so the whole job gets done by one contractor. Send your details through and we will scope it.
