Most of the job is underground
The visible part is the poles. The work is the trenching, the conduit, the pits and the reinstatement, and getting it in without closing the space.
We own our own excavator, so the civil side runs on our program rather than waiting on someone else's. At one park upgrade we ran the full pit and pipe network across the site before anything above ground went in, with a temporary builder's supply keeping the site live in the meantime.

One contractor for the whole electrical package
Public space lighting usually needs more supply than the site has. That means a new service, a bigger board and metering, and network approvals with it.
Thorntek holds Level 2 ASP 4869 with both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy across all four classes, so the supply, the metering, the network paperwork, the civil and the lighting are all one contractor and one program.

Common questions
Do you install park and pathway lighting?
Yes. Pathways, parks, reserves, car parks and shared paths. Poles, bollards, footings, the underground network and the board that runs it. Most of it comes to us through councils and head contractors as part of a wider upgrade.
Can you do the underground work as well as the electrical?
Yes, and it is usually the bulk of the job. Trenching, conduit, pits and reinstatement, then the cabling and the board. We own our own excavator, so the civil side is not sitting behind another contractor.
What about power to things other than lights?
Common on park jobs. We have run supply to BBQ areas, irrigation systems and amenities, and installed power bollards through a park alongside the lighting. If it needs power in a public space, it is the same job.
How do you handle a park that stays open during the works?
That is normal for this work. Trenches get staged and made safe, access stays open, and the program is built around when the space is actually used. We set that out in the quote rather than discovering it on site.
Do the boards stand up to being outside?
They have to. Public space boards get weather, sun and no attention for years. We build them for it, including custom 316 stainless steel weatherproof enclosures where the site warrants it.
Do you arrange the power supply to the site?
Yes. We are a Level 2 ASP with Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, so the new service, the metering and the network approvals are all handled in house alongside the lighting. One contractor for the whole electrical package.
